In this game, Philosopher’s stone was described of stones having magical powers. And maybe, you are familiar with the first book of Harry Potter and the stone in the anime, Fullmetal Alchemist.

If we examine about that, Philosopher’s stone, it was the stone studied by alchemists. And they believed it could change cheap metal as like copper or mercury, to gold or silver. And another special topic was Elixir of life, it give immortal to who drink it.

Even many scientists studied it; one of them was Isaac Newton. He suffered from some amnesia in his old days, people say; maybe the cause of his disease was mercury which he used to lick. Because, at that time, Alchemists or chemists lick them for identifying. They didn’t know it was hazardous.

But developing of chemistry, human being knew there are elements and they can’t change to other elements. The old belief was to decay.

But in modern physic, it is possible to change one element to other one by radiation or other nuclear processes. There is a funny story. Rutherford discovered nucleus. And get Nobel Prize. But he got the Nobel Prize in the chemical field. Because at that time, people thought if an element can changes to other, then it would do by a chemical process not a physical.

Anyway Alchemist’s dream, changing copper to gold, is possible in principle. But it would be very expensive and inefficient. Yes, it is not magic but science.
